How to Start a Blog for Your Business

Creating a blog...

might be an intimidating task when you're focused on growing your own company. Creating a blog might even be the last thing on your mind... but it shouldn't be. Why?

Blog pages help your company compete in online searches. Content is king. The more quality content you can offer your potential customers the easier they'll find your product and the more they'll trust your brand.

Here's the easiest and quickest way to start a blog for your business on a few popular hosting services.

Protip: Make sure your blog is hosted on the same domain as your product or service site. Don't use a third party like Tumblr or Medium. If the purpose of your blog is to drive traffic to your brand, then you'll want it on the same domain as what you're trying to sell.

Adding a blog to Wordpress.

From your admin dashboard go to pages > add new. Title this page "blog". Some templates will even have a blog option in the page attributes section that will set up the page in a blogging format. Then publish your page. Go back to your admin dashboard and click appearance > menus, check your blog page then click add to menu to make sure it shows up on your website navigation. When you're ready to write your blog post just make sure your post is being published to your blog page. Protip: Use the Yoast SEO plugin to make sure you're tagging your blog posts with appropriate keywords to get the farthest reach.

Adding a blog to Squarespace.

Some Squarespace templates also have a blog page readily available. If that's the case, you just need to make sure your blog page is linked and public by going to page then dragging your blog page under main navigation. If your template doesn't have a blog already available, go to pages, click the + icon to add a new page, select blog from the new page menu. Then when you're ready, make sure the blog page is linked and public. To make a blog post just click on your blog page from dashboard then click the + icon to add a new post. Your post will automatically be published to the blog page when you hit save & publish without having to direct it. Protip: To add a thumbnail image to your post, click the options tab then drag and drop your image into the image uploader. Click save.

Adding a blog to Shopify.

Shopify already comes with a built in blog page, making this set up incredibly easy. So easy, there's no reason you shouldn't be blogging. If you want to change the name of your blog page to something like "News" or "Our Blog" go to your admin, click online store > blog posts > manage blogs. Click the name of the blog you want to edit (if you have more than one blog). On the edit blog page, enter the new name you want for your blog in the title field. Click save. Protip: To make a blog post go your online store > blog posts > add new blogpost. Boom. Done.

Blogging is a great way to build your audience and generate more traffic and sales for your business. Blog posts drive traffic to your site by improving SEO, they let you tell stories that convert visitors into customers, and they increase customer engagement. Setting up a blog can help you build a community around your products and your brand.

What should you put on your blog?

If blogging feels like a sacrifice, make it easy on yourself. Keep the content minimal. Make your customers do most of the work by using your blog to answer their questions and concerns. Feature customer reviews as content. Are your customers posting about your on their socials? Ask their permission to use their product photos and comments in your blog.

It's still important to make time for big content pieces that serve and help your audience. Posts that show how to use your product or tutorials go a long way in building trust with your customer. Give give give give give, then take. Don't turn your blog post into a sales pitch. Your blog is a place for your customers to come for help and inspiration.

Protip: Schedule out blogs in advance. The added pressure of having to come up with a blog post on the fly will deter you away from making your blog a marketing necessity.
